NIST Wants Comments on Disaster Recovery Data Forms

## Summary

NIST is asking for public feedback on their plan to collect data about how communities bounce back from disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, and earthquakes. This helps them improve safety tools and guidance without making people fill out too many forms. Comments are open until June 10, 2025, and this effort aims to keep communities safer while respecting everyone's time.

## Abstract

The Department of Commerce, in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (PRA), invites the general public and other Federal agencies to comment on proposed, and continuing information collections, which helps us assess the impact of our information collection requirements and minimize the public's reporting burden. The purpose of this notice is to allow for 60 days of public comment preceding submission of the collection to OMB.

## Effects PRIA read

- NIST will ask people about disaster resilience: cost, low. NIST plans to conduct voluntary data collections asking people about disaster and community resilience, including specific events such as wildfire, urban fire, structure collapse, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, and flood. The collections may use surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, or…
- Annual response and time burden limits set: cost, low. NIST requests to maintain an annual allotment of 25,000 responses and an annual total of 18,000 burden hours for these collections. A questionnaire response may take about 15 minutes, while an interview may take about 2 hours.
- No monetary cost to respondents: benefit, low. NIST estimates the total annual cost to the public for these information collections is $0 and participation is voluntary. Comment deadline for this notice is June 10, 2025.
- Data used to improve community resilience: benefit, low. NIST says the results of these collections will be used to decrease negative impacts of disasters on society and increase community resilience within U.S. communities. The work supports NIST research and guidance under statutes such as the National Construction Safety Team Act and the National Eart…
- Agency will take steps to protect respondent confidentiality: benefit, low. The notice states that steps will be taken to protect the confidentiality of respondents in each activity covered by this request.
