Medicare Hospital Payment Proposal Gets a Technical Typo Fix

## Summary

This document fixes some typos and technical mistakes in the Medicare payment rules for hospitals that were first shared in April 2025. It affects hospitals getting Medicare payments for inpatient care and updates the rules for quality programs and payment rates for fiscal year 2026. These corrections make sure everything is clear and accurate before final decisions are made.

## Abstract

This document corrects technical and typographical errors in the proposed rule that appeared in the April 30, 2025 Federal Register titled "Medicare Program; Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems for Acute Care Hospitals and the Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment System and Policy Changes and Fiscal Year 2026 Rates; Requirements for Quality Programs; and Other Policy Changes".

## Effects PRIA read

- Updated Medicare DSH Payment Estimates: benefit, high. CMS corrected its estimated Medicare Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments. The corrected estimates are: FY 2023 = $14.136 billion, FY 2024 = $14.946 billion, FY 2025 = $15.286 billion, and FY 2026 = $15.791 billion.
- Corrected Uncompensated Care Payment Amount: benefit, high. CMS corrected the figure for a proposed uncompensated care payment to read $7,190,037,075 (previously shown as $7,140,406,650). This number represents the total amount shown in the proposed rule's calculation of uncompensated care payments.
- Revised Burden Estimate for SDOH-1 Measure Removal: benefit, high. CMS corrected the estimate for removing the SDOH-1 measure to say its removal would alleviate an annual burden for hospitals and patients of 626,009 hours, at a cost of $16,059,753, across all participating IPPS hospitals. This is a change to the burden and cost figures reported in the proposed rul…
- Revised Burden Estimate for SDOH-2 Measure Removal: benefit, low. CMS corrected the estimate for removing the SDOH-2 measure to say its removal would alleviate an estimated annual burden of 509 hours, at a cost of $28,188, across all participating IPPS hospitals. This replaces the previously published burden and cost numbers.
