FTC Extends Used Car Rule Paperwork Burden for Three Years

## Summary

The Federal Trade Commission wants to keep its rules for used car dealers for three more years. These rules make sure dealers show a clear "Buyers Guide" on every used car, helping buyers make smart choices. If you have thoughts, speak up by February 3, 2026—this affects businesses and involves millions in paperwork and costs.

## Abstract

The Federal Trade Commission ("FTC" or "Commission") is seeking public comment on its proposal to extend for an additional three years the current Paperwork Reduction Act ("PRA") clearance for information collection requirements in its "Used Motor Vehicle Trade Regulation Rule" ("Used Car Rule" or "Rule"), which applies to used vehicle dealers. That clearance expires on February 28, 2026.

- Buyers Guides Help Consumers Make Choices: benefit, low. The Rule requires dealers to display a Buyers Guide on each used car that discloses warranty coverage and other information to help purchasers make informed decisions. The FTC states the Buyers Guide requirement "promotes informed purchasing decisions."
