FAA Fine-Tunes Airport Approach and Takeoff Rules

## Summary

The FAA is updating the rules for how pilots approach and take off from certain airports to keep flights safe and smooth. These changes include new flight paths and obstacle rules based on fresh data and new technology. Pilots and airports need to follow these updates starting February 24, 2026, with no extra costs involved.

## Abstract

This rule establishes, amends, suspends, or removes Standard Instrument Approach Procedures (SIAPS) and associated Takeoff Minimums and Obstacle Departure procedures (ODPs) for operations at certain airports. These regulatory actions are needed because of the adoption of new or revised criteria, or because of changes occurring in the National Airspace System, such as the commissioning of new navigational facilities, adding new obstacles, or changing air traffic requirements. These changes are designed to provide safe and efficient use of the navigable airspace and to promote safe flight operations under instrument flight rules at the affected airports.

## Effects PRIA read

- Pilots and Airports Must Adopt Updated Procedures: benefit, medium. The FAA requires pilots and airports to follow new or revised Standard Instrument Approach Procedures (SIAPs), Takeoff Minimums, and Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs) starting February 24, 2026. The rule says these changes adopt new criteria, navigational facilities, or obstacle data to promote…
- Many Airport Procedures Effective March 19, 2026: benefit, medium. A set of specific SIAP, Takeoff Minimums, and ODP amendments for named airports (for example: San Jose, CA (SJC); Denver, CO (DEN); Reno, NV (RNO); Oshkosh, WI (OSH)) are listed as effective March 19, 2026. The rule lists individual procedure amendments and amendment numbers for each affected airpo…
- Charts and Procedures Available Free Online: benefit, low. All SIAPs and Takeoff Minimums and ODPs are available online free of charge via the FAA National Flight Data Center (nfdc.faa.gov). Pilots and others may register to access these materials without fee.
- FAA Finds Minimal Economic Burden On Small Entities: benefit, low. The FAA certifies that this amendment "will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities" under the Regulatory Flexibility Act. The agency determined the anticipated economic impact is minimal.
- Some Amendments Can Take Effect Quickly: cost, low. The FAA says some SIAP, Takeoff Minimums, and textual ODP amendments may be made effective in less than 30 days when required for immediate flight safety, while the remaining amendments will have an effective date at least 30 days after publication.
- Rescinded Amendment for Augusta, Maine: mixed, low. The final rule rescinds a prior February 5, 2026 amendment entry that would have made the Augusta, ME (AUG) VOR RWY 35, Amdt 7 effective March 19, 2026. That previously published entry is removed in its entirety.
