Army Asks for Thoughts on Tedious Visa Application Paperwork

## Summary

The U.S. Army wants your thoughts on a new form they plan to use for passport and visa services. They’re checking if the form is useful, easy to fill out, and not too much work for people. You’ve got until June 1, 2026, to share your ideas—no money changes yet, just a chance to help make things smoother!

## Abstract

In compliance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, the United States (U.S.) Army Installation Management Command, G1 Passport Services Division/DoD Passport and Visa announces a proposed public information collection and seeks public comment on the provisions thereof. Comments are invited on: whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including whether the information shall have practical utility; the accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed information collection; ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected; and ways to minimize the burden of the information collection on respondents, including through the use of automated collection techniques or other forms of information technology.

## Effects PRIA read

- One-hour DD Form 1056 time burden: cost, low. If you are a DoD civilian, military member, or their dependent applying for a no-fee passport or visa, you must complete DD Form 1056. The form takes an average of 60 minutes to fill out; the Army estimates 175,000 respondents and 175,000 annual burden hours.
- Personal data shared with State and embassies: cost, low. The information you provide on DD Form 1056 is used to process, track, and verify no-fee passport and visa requests and is shared with the Department of State and the embassy of the country you are traveling to for production of travel documents.
- No-fee passport/visa authorization rules: benefit, medium. Authorization to apply for a 'no-fee' passport and/or request a visa via DD Form 1056 is granted to applicants who can verify U.S. citizenship and legitimate official travel needs. Respondents include DoD civilians, military members, and their dependents traveling on official orders.
