Safety Zone Planned for Mackinac Bridge Swim Event

## Summary

On July 18, 2026, a safety zone will be set up around the Mackinac Bridge from 7 a.m. to noon to keep swimmers and boats safe during a big swim event. Boats and people can’t enter the 100-yard zone unless they get special permission. This temporary rule helps protect everyone and the environment without costing money but asks for public comments by June 4.

## Abstract

The Coast Guard is proposing to establish a temporary safety zone for navigable waters within a 100-yard radius of the center span of the Mackinac Bridge. The safety zone is needed to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment from a marine event involving swimmers under the bridge. This proposed rulemaking would prohibit persons and vessels from being in the safety zone unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port, Sector Northern Great Lakes. We invite your comments on this proposed rulemaking.
