Rainy Lake Fireworks Get Temporary No-Boat Zone

## Summary

On August 8, 2026, the Coast Guard plans to create a temporary safety zone around Rainy Lake near Ranier Beach Park for a fireworks show. Boats and people won’t be allowed inside this zone from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. unless they get special permission. This keeps everyone safe from fireworks hazards and protects the environment, so mark your calendars and plan ahead!

## Abstract

The Coast Guard is proposing to establish a temporary safety zone for certain navigable waters of Rainy Lake. The safety zone is needed to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment from potential hazards on these navigable waters near Ranier Beach Park, Ranier, MN created by a fireworks display on August 8, 2026. This proposed rulemaking would prohibit persons and vessels from being in the safety zone unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port, Marine Safety Unit Duluth. We invite your comments on this proposed rulemaking.

## Effects PRIA read

- No-entry 200-yard safety zone: cost, low. You may not be in the water or on a vessel within a 200-yard radius of the fireworks barge (at 48°37'04" N, 093°20'52" W) on August 8, 2026, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. unless the Captain of the Port or a designated representative gives you permission. The rule covers all navigable waters from sur…
- Permission and transit options provided: benefit, low. If you need to enter the safety zone, you can request permission from the Captain of the Port or their representative on VHF-FM channel 16. The Coast Guard will issue a Local Notice to Mariners so vessels can plan to transit around the zone or seek authorization.
- No significant economic impact for small entities: benefit, low. The Coast Guard certifies under 5 U.S.C. 605(b) that this proposed rule will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities because vessel traffic can transit around the area, the area and time affected are small, and the enforcement period is during normally low t…
