NRC Lets Georgia Nuclear Plant Skip One Review Step

## Summary

Southern Nuclear Operating Company got a green light to skip a usual safety review step for renewing the licenses of their Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2. This means the plant can keep running smoothly without waiting for extra reports, saving time and hassle. The exemption was officially granted on May 26, 2026, with no extra costs expected.

## Abstract

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued an exemption from the regulation that would have required the application for subsequent renewal of Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. DPR- 57 and NPF-5, which authorize Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. to operate Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant (Hatch), Units 1 and 2, respectively, to be referred to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards for a review and report, with any report being made part of the record of the application and made available to the public, except to the extent that security classification prevents disclosure. Due to this exemption, such referral, review, and report are no longer required.
