FEMA Quietly Redraws Flood Lines for Dozens of Towns

## Summary

FEMA is updating flood risk maps for certain communities using new science and data. These changes affect flood zones, flood heights, and insurance rules, so residents and businesses might see new flood risks and insurance costs. People have 90 days after local notice to ask for a review before changes become final.

## Abstract

This notice lists communities where the addition or modification of Base Flood Elevations (BFEs), base flood depths, Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundaries or zone designations, or the regulatory floodway (hereinafter referred to as flood hazard determinations), as shown on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), and where applicable, in the supporting Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports, prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for each community, is appropriate because of new scientific or technical data. The FIRM, and where applicable, portions of the FIS report, have been revised to reflect these flood hazard determinations through issuance of a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR), in accordance with Federal Regulations. The current effective community number is shown in the table below and must be used for all new policies and renewals.

## Effects PRIA read

- Map updates can change your flood risk: cost, medium. FEMA revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for specific communities to update Base Flood Elevations, flood depths, Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries or zone designations, and regulatory floodways. If you live or run a business in one of the listed comm…
- 90-day window to request reconsideration: benefit, low. From the date of the second local newspaper notice, any person has 90 days to ask the community to request that FEMA reconsider the flood hazard changes before they become final. The flood hazard information may change during that 90-day period.
- New community number required for policies: mixed, low. The notice states that the current effective community number shown in the table must be used for all new flood insurance policies and renewals for the listed communities. This affects how insurers identify the community on new policies and renewals once the map revisions are in effect.
- Community NFIP adoption requirement: cost, medium. FEMA states the revised FIRM and FIS reports are the basis of the floodplain management measures a community is required to adopt or to show evidence of having in effect in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
