Bayer's Superweed Cotton: USDA Reviews Deregulation Petition Now

## Summary

Bayer U.S.-Crop Science wants the green light to grow a new type of cotton that resists several herbicides, making weed control easier for farmers. The USDA is reviewing this request and asking the public to share their thoughts by November 20, 2026. If approved, this could change farming practices and possibly save money on weed management.

## Abstract

We are advising the public that the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has received a petition from Bayer U.S.-Crop Science seeking a determination of nonregulated status for herbicide resistant MON 96012 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) which has been developed using genetic engineering to tolerate glyphosate, glufosinate, dicamba, triketone 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase -inhibiting, and PPO- inhibiting herbicides. We are making the petition and draft plant pest risk assessment available for public review and comment.

## Effects PRIA read

- Petition to Deregulate Multi‑Herbicide Cotton: benefit, medium. If you are a cotton farmer or run an agricultural business, Bayer has petitioned APHIS to grant nonregulated status to MON 96012 cotton, which is engineered to tolerate glyphosate, glufosinate, dicamba, triketone HPPD‑inhibiting, and PPO‑inhibiting herbicides. The agency is accepting public comment…
- Draft Risk Assessment Finds Low Pest Risk: benefit, low. APHIS prepared a draft plant pest risk assessment (PPRA) for MON 96012 and concluded the draft PPRA found MON 96012 is unlikely to pose an increased plant pest risk compared to the nonmodified cotton variety. The draft PPRA and petition are available for public review and comment through November 2…
