Ford Asks Gov to Ignore Ranger Truck Safety Flaws

## Summary

Ford found that some 2024-2025 Ford Rangers don’t fully meet safety rules about controls and displays. They asked the government to say this issue doesn’t really affect safety, so they don’t have to fix it right away. If you want to share your thoughts, you have until October 21, 2026, to speak up—no money changes yet, just a chance to comment!

## Abstract

Ford Motor Company (Ford) has determined that certain model year (MY) 2024-2025 Ford Ranger motor vehicles do not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, Controls And Displays. Ford filed a noncompliance report dated September 11, 2025, and subsequently petitioned NHTSA (the "Agency") on October 3, 2025, for a decision that the subject noncompliance is inconsequential as it relates to motor vehicle safety. This document announces receipt of Ford's petition.

## Effects PRIA read

- Rangers Missing Speed Unit Briefly: cost, low. About 76,125 model year 2024-2025 Ford Ranger vehicles manufactured between December 9, 2022 and August 29, 2025 may temporarily not show the speedometer unit (MPH or km/h) for about four seconds when the driver changes the vehicle's drive mode. The numeric speed (for example, “60”) remains visible…
- Dealers Still Restricted From Selling: cost, medium. Even if NHTSA grants Ford's petition, the decision only exempts Ford from duties to notify owners and remedy the noncompliance for vehicles Ford no longer controlled when it learned of the issue. Distributors and dealers remain prohibited from selling, offering for sale, or introducing noncompliant…
- Software Fix For New Production Rangers: benefit, low. Ford says it implemented a software update for new production Ranger vehicles so the speed units (MPH or km/h) remain visible continuously during the drive-mode animation sequence. Ford included images of the affected and corrected displays in the petition docket.
