FCC Asks: Still Need That AM Radio Signal Form?

## Summary

The FCC is checking in on a form that AM radio stations use to report their signal settings, making sure it’s still useful and not too much work. They want feedback from businesses and nonprofits by November 23, 2026, to keep the process smooth and easy, especially for small groups. This review won’t cost much time—just about an hour per response—and helps keep paperwork light and clear.

## Abstract

As part of its continuing effort to reduce paperwork burdens, and as required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (PRA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) invites the general public and other Federal agencies to take this opportunity to comment on the following information collections. Comments are requested concerning: whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the Commission, including whether the information shall have practical utility; the accuracy of the Commission's burden estimate; ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information collected; ways to minimize the burden of the collection of information on the respondents, including the use of automated collection techniques or other forms of information technology; and ways to further reduce the information collection burden on small business concerns with fewer than 25 employees.

- 10‑Day MDCL Notification Requirement: cost, low. If you operate an AM radio station and begin using Modulation Dependent Carrier Level (MDCL) technology, you must submit FCC Form 338 electronically within 10 days after commencing MDCL operations. The FCC estimates the form takes about 1 hour per response, with 15 respondents and 15 total annual b…
- Start MDCL Without Prior Authorization: benefit, low. AM stations using MDCL control technologies may commence MDCL operations without prior FCC authorization, provided the station files the electronic notification (FCC Form 338) within 10 days after starting. This approach implements the Commission's October 2015 amendment (47 CFR 73.1560(a)(1)) allo…
- Focus on Reducing Small Business Burden: benefit, low. The FCC is soliciting comments specifically on ways to minimize the information-collection burden on small business concerns with fewer than 25 employees and requests feedback by November 23, 2026. The Commission is also requesting a three-year extension of OMB control number 3060-1194 for this col…
