A Very Long Federal Title Leads to a New Canal Lock

## Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided to build a new, modern lock on the Industrial Canal in New Orleans to make boat traffic smoother and cut down on costly repairs. This upgrade will help ships move more efficiently between the Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, benefiting local businesses and communities. The project’s plan was finalized in August 2026 and aims to save time and money in the long run.

## Abstract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announces the availability of the Record of Decision (ROD) for the final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Louisiana, New Industrial Canal Lock and Connecting Channels Proposed Project, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) (ASA(CW)) signed the ROD on August 27, 2026.
