NOAA Casts Its Fishing Survey Across More Southeastern States

## Summary

NOAA is updating its fishing and boating survey to cover more Southeastern states, not just Florida. This means more anglers and boaters will share their habits, helping NOAA understand regional fishing better. They’re asking for public comments by January 4, 2027, but the survey won’t take more time or cost more money.

## Abstract

The Department of Commerce, in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (PRA), invites the general public and other Federal agencies to comment on proposed, and continuing information collections, which helps us assess the impact of our information collection requirements and minimize the public's reporting burden. The purpose of this notice is to allow for 60 days of public comment preceding submission of the collection to OMB.

This means marine anglers and boat owners with a license in the Gulf of America or Atlantic may now be included…
- Survey participation time and cost unchanged: benefit, low. The survey is voluntary and will be done online via an email invitation. NOAA estimates 3,120 respondents, each taking about 3 minutes, for a total annual burden of 156 hours and an estimated cost to the public of $0.00.
- Data to inform regulatory economic analyses: benefit, low. NOAA will use survey responses to evaluate how boaters and anglers change behavior in response to trip costs and regulatory updates, and to support economic impact analyses of regulatory revisions such as bag limits or season lengths. The data will also be used to build predictive models of regiona…
