FAA eyes Airbus overhead bins after loose parts raise concerns

## Summary

The FAA wants certain Airbus A318 to A321 planes checked because some overhead storage bins might have loose parts that could cause trouble. They’re asking for a one-time inspection and fixes if needed, plus a ban on installing the faulty parts. Airlines need to comment by December 21, 2026, and get ready for these safety updates that keep passengers safe without breaking the bank.

## Abstract

The FAA proposes to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Airbus SAS Model A318-111 and -112 airplanes; Model A319- 111, -112, -113, -114, -115, -131, -132, and -133 airplanes; Model A320-211, -212, -214, -216, -231, -232, and -233 airplanes; and Model A321-111, -112, -131, -211, -212, -213, -231, and -232 airplanes. This proposed AD was prompted by reports of damage to the YZ-axis attachment points on airplanes equipped with certain overhead stowage compartments (OHSC) bins. Investigations showed that bushings, retainer rings, and pins had migrated from their original positions. This proposed AD would require a one-time inspection for discrepancies of affected OHSC bins and, depending on findings, accomplishment of applicable corrective actions. This proposed AD would also prohibit the installation of affected parts. The FAA is proposing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

## Effects PRIA read

- Required one‑time OHSC inspection: cost, medium. If you operate certain Airbus A318, A319, A320, or A321 airplanes listed in EASA AD 2025-0248, the FAA proposes a required one-time visual inspection of overhead stowage compartment (OHSC) housing side attachments for migrated or loose bushings, retainer rings, or pins. The FAA estimates the inspec…
- Ban on installing affected OHSC parts: cost, low. The proposed AD would prohibit installation of affected overhead stowage compartment parts (bushings/retainer rings/pins) identified in EASA AD 2025-0248. Operators and maintenance organizations must not install those affected parts when returning or maintaining OHSCs.
- On‑condition repair costs estimate: cost, high. If inspection finds discrepancies, the proposed AD would require corrective actions (e.g., special detailed inspection, repairs, pin installation, or manufacturer repair instructions). The FAA estimates these on-condition actions could take up to 6 work-hours at $85/hour plus parts up to $770, for…
- Inspection reporting paperwork burden: cost, low. The proposed AD (via EASA AD 2025-0248) requires reporting inspection results, including no-findings, to the manufacturer. The FAA estimates public reporting for this collection will take approximately 1 hour per response (OMB Control Number 2120-0056) and all responses are mandatory.
