Shelter Cove Airport Gets New Instrument-Flying Airspace Rules

## Summary

Shelter Cove Airport in California is upgrading its airspace to better support planes flying by instruments, not just by sight. This new Class E airspace will help pilots safely arrive and depart under tricky weather conditions, starting from 700 feet above the ground. Pilots and local flyers should note that comments on this change are open until December 21, 2026, with no extra costs involved.

## Abstract

This action proposes to establish a Class E airspace area extending upwards from 700 feet above the surface of the earth at Shelter Cove Airport (K0Q5), Shelter Cove, CA. K0Q5 is transitioning from a visual flight rules (VFR) to an instrument flight rules (IFR) airport. Additionally, this action would establish a controlled airspace area for the airport, providing coverage to arriving IFR aircraft descending below 1,500 feet above the surface and departing IFR aircraft until reaching 1,200 feet above the surface.

## Effects PRIA read

- Shelter Cove gets Class E airspace for IFR: benefit, low. If you fly into or out of Shelter Cove Airport (K0Q5), the FAA proposes new Class E controlled airspace starting at 700 feet above the surface to support instrument flight rules (IFR) operations. The airspace would assist IFR arrivals descending below 1,500 feet and departing IFR aircraft until rea…
- FAA expects only de minimis costs to operators: cost, low. The FAA says the proposed Class E airspace is routine and is expected to result in, at most, de minimis costs from compliance or minor flight rerouting, and that it will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. Comments on the proposal are due on or before D…
