The law excepts lawful activity by the federal government, a State, or a political subdivision of a State. - Emergency responders — Knowingly obstructing an authorized emergency vehicle carries higher penalties, up to $15,000 and 20 years in prison. - Criminal defendants and courts — If an obstruction results in death, offenders face fines consistent with the statute and imprisonment for any term of years or for life.
