## Summary

**A collective Congressional Gold Medal recognizing African Americans who served with Union forces in the Civil War.** This bill would authorize a posthumous gold medal to honor their service and direct the Smithsonian to preserve and display it. - Families and descendants: Gives formal national recognition to about 200,000 African American men who served in the Union Army and about 19,000 who served in the Navy, and acknowledges women who served without formal enlistment. - Museums and educators: Directs that the medal be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research and expresses a sense of Congress that the Smithsonian should show the medal at other locations associated with the United States Colored Troops. - U.S. Mint and collectors: Directs the Secretary of the Treasury to have the U.S. Mint strike the gold medal with appropriate design and allows bronze duplicates to be sold at prices sufficient to cover costs. - Federal financing and administration: Authorizes use of the U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund to pay minting costs and requires proceeds from duplicate sales to be returned to that fund.
