## Summary

**Prevents interment or memorialization in national cemeteries for people who have committed Federal or State capital crimes.** It would require officials to take reasonable steps, including searching public records, to confirm that someone being buried or memorialized is eligible and would apply that scrutiny to interments or memorials after enactment. - Families and next of kin would be notified if remains are disinterred and given the option to receive the remains or to have an appropriate disposition if the next of kin cannot be located. - The Secretary of Veterans Affairs and cemetery managers would be responsible for heightened eligibility checks and for taking actions needed to enforce the prohibition across Arlington National Cemetery and National Cemetery Administration sites. - Directs the Secretary to disinter the remains of George E. Siple from Indiantown Gap National Cemetery and to handle notification and disposition for that named case.

## Provisions PRIA read

- Remove George Siple's remains from VA cemetery: benefit, low. If enacted, VA would disinter the remains of George E. Siple from Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. VA would notify the next of kin. After removal, VA would give the remains to the next of kin or arrange a proper disposition if they are not available.
- Stricter checks before VA and Arlington burials: cost, low. If enacted, VA and Arlington National Cemetery officials would have to search public records before a burial or memorial. They would take reasonable steps to ensure the person is not barred, including for committing a federal or state capital crime. The rule would apply only to burials or memorials…
