## Summary

**Keep D.C. residents serving federal custody close to home.** This bill would require the Bureau of Prisons to place most District of Columbia residents sentenced under the D.C. legacy statute in facilities no more than 250 miles from Washington, D.C., unless the person asks for a farther placement or the Director finds extraordinary circumstances. - Families and communities will likely find visiting and reentry planning easier because more people would be housed nearer to D.C. - Covered individuals remain eligible for prerelease custody and transfers to begin supervised release under existing federal law, preserving those transition options. - The Bureau may exceed the 250-mile limit only for documented "extraordinary circumstances." In those cases the Director must provide a written explanation within 30 days to the House Judiciary Committee, House Oversight and Reform Committee, Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. - The placement rule would take effect no later than two years after enactment.
