**Expands penalties for visa overstays.** This bill would create a new "Visa Overstays" offense that applies when a nonimmigrant fails to maintain their admitted status for an aggregate of 10 days and would attach both civil and criminal penalties. - Nonimmigrant visa holders: A first violation could bring criminal fines or up to 6 months in jail and a civil penalty of $500 to $1,000 for each violation. - Repeat offenders and people with prior convictions: A later violation or a prior conviction under the related offense would raise criminal exposure up to 2 years and can double the civil penalty amounts. - Immigration enforcement and courts: Officials would be able to pursue civil penalties in addition to criminal charges and use prior penalties as a cross-reference to increase current sanctions.
