## Summary

**Expands mandatory immigration detention for noncitizens accused of assaulting law enforcement officers.** This bill would create a new inadmissibility ground tied to assaults on officers and require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to issue detainers and take custody when individuals are not already detained. - Noncitizens charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or who admit to acts that meet the essential elements of an assault on a law enforcement officer would be covered by the new inadmissibility ground and subject to detainer-based custody. - The bill defines “assault” by the law of the place where the acts occurred and expands “law enforcement officer” to include firefighters and other first responders. - The Secretary of Homeland Security would be required to issue a detainer for such individuals and, if they are not held by federal, state, or local officials, to effectively and expeditiously take custody.
