## Summary

**Treat drilling fluids, produced waters, and other wastes from oil, gas, and geothermal production as hazardous waste when they meet the law's criteria.** This bill would require EPA to decide which of those wastes meet hazardous-waste criteria and to write rules controlling them and tightening standards for facilities that receive non-listed wastes. - Families and nearby communities would see stronger protections at disposal sites, including groundwater monitoring, stricter siting rules, corrective action, and financial assurance to help detect and address contamination. - Energy companies that generate drilling fluids or produced waters could have those wastes listed as hazardous and then be subject to hazardous-waste treatment, storage, and disposal rules, although EPA may tailor requirements to the wastes' special characteristics. - Facilities that accept non-listed oil, gas, or geothermal wastes would face revised federal criteria for operation, monitoring, cleanup, and acceptable locations to better protect health and the environment.
