## Summary

**Ban on importing nonhuman primates**. This bill would prohibit importing live nonhuman primates into the United States while allowing a narrow exception for Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facilities that certify the animals will not be used, transferred, sold, leased, or bred for experiments. - AZA-accredited facilities: Would allow accredited zoos and similar facilities to receive primates only if the importer certifies the animals will not be provided for experiments or bred for experiments. - Research organizations and commercial importers: Would block imports intended for biomedical research, testing, or breeding for research, restricting access for laboratories and commercial dealers. - Enforcement and penalties: Would task U.S. Customs and Border Protection with denying clearance for violating shipments and authorize civil penalties up to $50,000 per violation plus forfeiture of unlawfully imported animals. The Secretary of the Treasury would be required to issue implementing regulations within one year after enactment following notice and comment.
