## Summary

**This bill would protect U.S. agricultural exporters' right to use and defend the use of "common names" for foods, wines, and beers in foreign markets.** It would set a formal definition and list of common names and require the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to negotiate protections and report on progress. - Producers and exporters would get a formal path to secure the right to use common names abroad through negotiated agreements, memoranda of understanding, or exchanges of letters. - Food, wine, and beer businesses would benefit from a clear definition and an explicit list of examples, including cheeses like parmesan and asiago, rice like basmati, sausages like bratwurst, wine varietals, and many beer style names. - The USDA and the USTR would coordinate diplomacy, may use market sources and Codex Alimentarius standards when judging names, and must provide semi-annual briefings to four congressional committees on their efforts and success.
