## Summary

**Creates the Route 66 National Historic Trail** to recognize all historic alignments of U.S. Highway 66 and set rules for how the trail is managed. It defines the trail along an approximately 2,400-mile route from Chicago to Santa Monica and directs the Secretary of the Interior to preserve Route 66's idiosyncratic character. - The Secretary of the Interior will administer the trail and keep the official map on file for public inspection. This sets a single federal office responsible for oversight while aiming to preserve the route's unique features. - Affected Indian Tribes must receive active, meaningful, and timely consultation before any undertaking that would have substantial direct impacts. Consultation is required consistent with existing federal law and Executive Order 13175. - Federal land acquisition is tightly limited. The United States may not acquire land outside a federally managed area's exterior boundary without an owner's consent and may not average more than 1/4 mile on either side of the trail. The designation does not authorize eminent domain, change existing easement or rights-of-way authorities, create new permitting requirements solely from the trail designation, or impede energy development.
