STEAM Act
Sponsored By: Representative Lee, Susie [D-NV-3]
In Committee
Summary
Would expand NEPA review to include geothermal energy. The bill would amend Section 390 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to reference the Geothermal Steam Act of 1970 for the purpose of geothermal exploration and development. That change inserts geothermal alongside oil and gas in the statute so federal environmental reviews consider geothermal projects under the same NEPA framework as other energy development.

NEPA review for geothermal projects
This bill would add geothermal exploration and development to NEPA review rules. Agencies would use the same process used for gas projects in this section. Developers could see more review steps and possible delays. Nearby communities would get the same environmental review protections as for gas projects. This is a process change and would not change taxes or provide payments.
