## Bill overview: provisions PRIA read

- More schools face reading support requirements: benefit, low. Schools face added reading requirements when their average reading-test pass rate is below 75% over three straight years. The prior threshold was below 70%. Affected schools must use a state-procured reading screener and follow the required reading rules. They must also join the Indiana literacy ca…
- Parents gain seats on student appeals panel: benefit, low. The nine-member case review panel now includes four parents of high school students and four school administrators. The education secretary or the secretary’s designee chairs the panel. This changes who reviews student cases, including challenges brought by parents.
- Teacher programs gain state accreditation option: benefit, low. The Indiana Department of Education can now accredit teacher preparation programs itself. The department must also approve at least two other accreditors. This gives teacher preparation programs another possible accreditation option.
- Some college programs need continuation approval: cost, low. State colleges must seek Commission for Higher Education approval to keep degree programs below specified graduate counts. The limits use average yearly graduates over the previous three years: fewer than 10 associate, 15 bachelor’s, or 7 master’s graduates. The limit is fewer than 3 graduates for…
- State removes an education rule: mixed, low. The law voids education rule 511 IAC 13-1-1(b)(6) and requires its removal from state publications. The section ordering this removal expires July 1, 2027. The supplied text does not explain what the removed rule covers or how its removal affects families.
