## Bill overview: provisions PRIA read

- Cities cannot double drivers’ speeding fees: benefit, low. Cities cannot use their authority to charge up to twice the state fee for speeding violations. That higher-fee authority remains available for other covered vehicle and traffic ordinance violations.
- Drivers get higher interstate speed limits: benefit, low. The law raises North Dakota's interstate maximum speed from 75 to 80 mph. This applies to paved, divided, multilane interstates with controlled access. Other applicable speed limits and road conditions can still require lower speeds.
- Highway speed limits can track hazards: benefit, low. The transportation director can designate state-highway zones with changing speed-limit signs. With Highway Patrol coordination, real-time systems can adjust limits to support safe, efficient traffic. The director can temporarily lower limits for unsafe conditions without an administrative order. B…
- Drivers face per-mile speeding fees: cost, low. Drivers cited for speeding pay $20 or $3 per mph over the limit, whichever is greater. On highways posted above 65 mph, they pay $20 or $5 per mph over, whichever is greater. Driving at least 16 mph over the limit adds $20. These fees also apply to equivalent city ordinance violations.
