- Bigger survivor checks for State Patrol families: benefit, high. Beginning July 1, 2027, certain Nebraska State Patrol survivor benefits rise to 100% of the officer’s annuity. Before that date, the survivor share stays at 75%. The 100% benefit is paid to a surviving spouse for life or to dependent children under age 19 in the listed cases.
- New paycheck rates for school pensions: benefit, high. Starting July 1, 2025, your pension deduction is set each July 1 by the fund’s funded ratio. The rate is 9.75% if the ratio is under 96%. It is 8.75% if 96% to under 98%, 8% if 98% to under 100%, and 7.25% if 100% or more.
- More state funding for school pensions: benefit, medium. Beginning July 1, 2025, the state pays an extra 2% of total member pay each year to every Class V school district retirement system. Also starting July 1, 2025, the state makes a yearly deposit to the School Retirement Fund based on its funded ratio: 2% when under 96%, 0.7% when 96% to under 100%,…
- Immediate effect and statute cleanup: mixed, low. The law takes effect immediately due to an emergency clause. It also repeals statutes 79-916, 79-958, 79-966, and 81-2026 to align the code with these changes.
