## Bill overview: provisions PRIA read

- Licensing exemption for optician apprentices: benefit, medium. People enrolled in a Board-approved, registered optician apprenticeship are exempt from the optician chapter's requirements. The program must follow standards set by Virginia's Department of Workforce Development and Advancement. The law does not specify a payment or fee change.
- More licensing paths for geologists: benefit, medium. Geologist applicants can meet the coursework-based education requirement with at least 30 semester hours, or equivalent, in geological science. Those courses no longer need to lead to a geology major. The Board must also license people with an unexpired geologist certification issued before July 1,…
- Permit paths for hearing aid trainees: benefit, low. The Board can issue training permits to people training to become licensed hearing aid specialists. It can issue work permits to people eligible to take the licensing exam. The Board must set rules and time periods for both permits, and work-permit holders must follow Board rules. The provided text…
- Soil scientists get cycle-based education cap: benefit, low. The continuing-education cap for professional soil scientists changes from eight hours per year to eight contact hours per renewal cycle. The Board sets the requirements, and continuing education remains required to maintain and renew a license. The provided text does not state the renewal cycle's…
- Contractors face changed building design exemptions: mixed, low. Design-license exemptions for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical installations expand to building-code Use Group A-4 buildings. They end for Use Group A-3 buildings other than churches. Electrical systems must stay at or below 600 volts and 800 amps and comply with applicable codes. Electrical de…
- Two professional licensing sections repealed: mixed, low. The law repeals Virginia Code sections 54.1-703.1 and 54.1-703.3. The provided text does not describe what those sections covered. Their effects on license holders, applicants, and households cannot be determined from this provision alone.
