EPA Discovers Plastic Chemical Bad After Only Decades

Published Date: 1/6/2025

Notice

Summary

The EPA has finished checking the safety of a chemical called DIDP and found it can harm people’s health. Companies that make, use, or handle DIDP will soon face new rules to keep everyone safe. These changes could affect how DIDP is made and used, so folks should get ready for upcoming actions and possible costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Workplace Health Risk for Female Workers

If you are a female worker of reproductive age, EPA determined that DIDP can cause non-cancer developmental harm (reduced offspring survival) from acute inhalation exposures. EPA found an unreasonable risk to human health based on developmental toxicity in laboratory studies.

Manufacturers/Users Face TSCA Rules

Because EPA found DIDP presents an unreasonable risk, EPA must initiate risk management under TSCA section 6(a). If your company manufactures, processes, distributes, uses, or disposes of DIDP, expect proposed regulatory actions and opportunities for public comment.

Spray Applications Likely Targeted

EPA identified that acute inhalation during spray application of certain DIDP-containing products contributes to the unreasonable risk. If you spray adhesives and sealants; paints and coatings; lacquers, stains, varnishes, and floor finishes; or penetrants and inspection fluids, EPA expects to focus risk management on these uses to address unprotected worker exposures.
