FAA updates instrument approach rules

Starting January 8, 2025, the FAA is establishing, amending, suspending, or removing Standard Instrument Approach Procedures (SIAPs), Takeoff Minimums, and Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs). Pilots, airlines, and airports must follow the new procedures, which the rule says are designed to provide safe and efficient use of the navigable airspace.

SIAPs and ODPs available free online

All SIAPs and Takeoff Minimums and ODPs are available online free of charge; you can register and access them at the National Flight Data Center (nfdc.faa.gov). Individual copies may also be obtained from the FAA Air Traffic Organization Service Area for the affected airport.

No significant small-entity economic impact

The FAA certified that this amendment will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities under the Regulatory Flexibility Act and that the anticipated impact is minimal.

Airport-specific procedure effective dates listed

The amendment lists specific SIAP and Takeoff Minimum/ODP changes with effective dates: Effective 23 January 2025 — Ormond Beach, FL (OMN) RNAV (GPS) RWY 9 Amdt 1D and RNAV (GPS) RWY 17 Amdt 1B; Effective 20 February 2025 — a set of procedures at listed airports including Dillingham, AK (DLG/PADL), Santa Barbara, CA (SBA), Washington, DC (IAD), and others as specified in the amendatory language.
