9/11 Heroes' ALS Fight Hits Bureaucratic Wall of 'Not Enough Proof'

Published Date: 1/22/2025

Notice

Summary

The World Trade Center Health Program looked into adding ALS (a serious nerve disease) to its list of covered health conditions but found there isn’t enough proof to do so right now. This means no changes or new benefits for WTC responders or survivors related to ALS at this time. The decision keeps things as they are, with no new rules or money changes coming soon.

ALS Not Added to WTC List

The World Trade Center Health Program reviewed four petitions (Petitions 031, 036, 039, and 053) asking to add amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to the List of WTC-Related Health Conditions and found insufficient evidence. Because of that finding, ALS will not be added to the list and there will be no new benefits, rulemaking, or request for a Scientific/Technical Advisory Committee recommendation at this time.
