Published Date: 1/23/2025

Notice

Summary

Big shipping companies CMA CGM, COSCO, and others are teaming up to share space on their ships between Europe, the U.S., and Central America. These new agreements, starting in January 2025, help them work together better and add new routes, like including France. If you’re involved in shipping or trade, keep an eye out—these changes could speed up deliveries and affect costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.

North Europe–US Space Chartering

CMA CGM is authorized to charter space to COSCO for trade linking North Europe ports (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium), ports in Central America and the Caribbean (Panama, Colombia, Dominican Republic), and U.S. East Coast and U.S. West Coast ports. This Agreement (No. 201446) is proposed to take effect on January 10, 2025. If you are involved in shipping or trade on these routes, these firms are now allowed to share vessel space and coordinate services, which could speed deliveries and affect shipping costs.

Mediterranean–US Atlantic Vessel Sharing

CMA CGM, COSCO, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and OOCL are authorized to charter and exchange space on one another's vessels and to coordinate transportation services between Mediterranean ports (Spain and Italy) and U.S. Atlantic coast ports. This MED–USEC vessel sharing Agreement (No. 201447) is proposed to take effect on January 13, 2025. Firms and shippers using Spain–Italy to U.S. Atlantic routes should monitor changes in capacity, schedules, and costs due to this coordination.

France Added to North Europe Scope

An amendment to Agreement No. 201446 (Agreement No. 201446-001) adds France to the geographic scope of the CMA CGM/COSCO North Europe–USEC/USWC Service Agreement. The amendment is proposed to take effect on January 13, 2025. Shippers and trade participants dealing with France should note France is now included in the carriers' authorized space-sharing area.
