Austro Engines Get FAA Oil Check Overhaul for Safety
Published Date: 2/25/2025
Rule
Summary
The FAA updated rules for certain Austro Engine E4 and E4P engines to keep them safe. If your engine is on the list, you’ll need to keep checking the oil for aluminum and fix or replace parts if needed. The new rules add some engines, remove others, and set clear deadlines—so pilots and owners should act soon to avoid costly problems.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.
Required piston or core replacements
If oil analysis shows aluminum above acceptable limits, the AD requires replacement of pistons, piston rings, connecting-rod assemblies, and/or the crankcase, or alternatively replacement of the engine core. Those replacement actions are mandatory under the AD for affected Austro Engine Model E4 and E4P engines.
Mandatory oil aluminum testing
If you own or operate Austro Engine Model E4 or E4P engines covered by this AD, you must perform repetitive engine oil analysis for aluminum content as required by the Airworthiness Directive (superseding AD 2023-20-03). The tests must be done repeatedly and you must follow the AD’s instructions when aluminum is outside the acceptable limits.
Changes to which engines apply
The AD superseding AD 2023-20-03 keeps the prior requirements but adds compliance times for additional affected engine serial numbers and removes certain engine serial numbers from the AD’s applicability. That means some owners/operators will newly be subject to the testing and repair requirements, while others will be removed from the AD.
