Published Date: 3/5/2025

Notice

Summary

Seaspan Energy Ltd. asked the government to confirm that selling and loading liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel ships won’t be controlled by certain federal gas laws. This could make fueling ships easier and less regulated, affecting companies using LNG for marine fuel. People have until a set deadline to share their thoughts or join the discussion before any final decision is made.

Petition to Exempt LNG Bunkering from FERC

Seaspan Energy filed a petition on February 7, 2025 asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to declare that the sale and loading of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a bunkering facility to a bunkering barge for the sole purpose of using that LNG as marine vessel fuel would not be subject to FERC jurisdiction under sections 3 and 7 of the Natural Gas Act (15 U.S.C. 717(b), 717(f)). Interested parties may file protests or motions to intervene by 5 p.m. Eastern on March 31, 2025.
