HUD Extends Deadline for Greener Home Builds

Published Date: 3/10/2025

Notice

Summary

HUD and USDA are rolling out new energy-saving rules for homes they help pay for, but they’re giving builders a 6-month grace period to get ready. This affects folks working on FHA-insured homes, public housing, and special grant projects, with Section 8 projects getting even more time until April 2026. The goal? Cooler bills and greener homes without rushing anyone!

Six‑Month Grace for Most HUD/USDA Projects

If you build or renovate projects financed by HUD or USDA under FHA‑Insured Multifamily, FHA‑Insured Single Family, the Public Housing Capital Fund, or Competitive Grants (Choice Neighborhoods, Section 202, Section 811), the compliance dates for the new energy efficiency standards are delayed by six months beyond their previously published dates.

Section 8 PBV Compliance Pushed to April 2026

If you manage or work on Section 8 Project‑Based Voucher (PBV) properties, the compliance date for the new energy efficiency standards is delayed until April 2026.

Energy Efficiency Standards Adopted April 26, 2024

On April 26, 2024, HUD and USDA published the Final Determination that adopts energy efficiency standards for new construction of HUD‑ and USDA‑financed housing. These standards apply to the HUD programs covered by that Final Determination and have scheduled compliance dates (some of which this notice delays).
