Amino Acid Pesticides Now Okay for Greenhouse Cukes?

Published Date: 5/14/2025

Rule

Summary

Good news for farmers and pesticide makers! The EPA says l-arginine, used as a protein helper in greenhouse cucumbers, is safe enough that it doesn’t need a residue limit when used at 1% or less. This means less paperwork and faster approvals, helping growers keep things fresh without extra costs or delays.

L-Arginine Tolerance Exemption for Cucumbers

The EPA exempts residues of l-arginine (CAS No. 74-79-3) from the requirement of a tolerance when it is used as an inert ingredient (protein stabilizer) on greenhouse pre-bloom cucumbers at a maximum concentration of 1% or less. This rule eliminates the need to establish a maximum permissible residue level for l-arginine when used according to that exemption.
