Helicopter Checks Tightened: FAA's Routine Rotor Rules
Published Date: 5/22/2025
Proposed Rule
Summary
If you fly certain Airbus EC225LP helicopters, the FAA wants you to do more checks and part swaps to keep things safe. They’re adding more parts to watch, making some replacements happen more often, and tightening who can do the work. These changes aim to keep your helicopter flying safely without surprise breakdowns, so get ready to update your maintenance plans soon!

Continued AD actions remain required
If you operate or maintain Airbus Helicopters Model EC225LP helicopters, the proposed rule would continue the actions required by AD 2019-19-13: determine total hours time-in-service (TIS) of certain free wheel shafts, replace the main rotor gearbox (MGB) or the right-hand (RH) free wheel shaft when required, install placards, and revise the Rotorcraft Flight Manual (RFM). These are ongoing maintenance and documentation tasks you must keep doing under the new proposed AD.
Repetitive replacement of shaft or MGB required
The FAA proposes to require repetitive replacement of the main rotor gearbox (MGB) or the right-hand (RH) free wheel shaft on affected EC225LP helicopters. That means operators will need to replace one of these components on a recurring schedule as specified by the AD.
More MGB part numbers added
The FAA proposes to expand which MGB part numbers are covered, adding an additional part‑numbered main rotor gearbox to the AD's applicability. That means more EC225LP helicopters with the newly listed MGB part number will have to follow the AD's inspection and replacement rules.
Stricter rules on who may replace parts
The proposed AD would change the requirements for who is allowed to replace affected parts on EC225LP helicopters, tightening the qualifications or approvals needed to perform the work. If you rely on certain maintenance personnel or shops, you may need different or higher‑qualified personnel to do these replacements.
Expanded parts installation limits imposed
The proposed AD would expand the conditions under which certain parts may not be installed on EC225LP helicopters. That means maintainers and parts suppliers must follow tighter installation limitations described in the AD when replacing or installing those parts.
Change to TIS determination requirement
The proposed AD would change the requirement for how to determine the total hours time-in-service (TIS) of a certain free wheel shaft. If you maintain these helicopters, you will need to follow the revised TIS determination procedure described in the AD when checking that shaft.
