Utah Gas Storage Upgrade: Tell Us Your Eco Worries by July

Published Date: 6/23/2025

Notice

Summary

Magnum Gas Storage wants to update its gas storage facilities in Utah, and the government is asking the public for ideas and concerns about how this might affect the environment. If you live in Millard, Juab, or Utah Counties, your voice matters! You’ve got until July 17, 2025, to share your thoughts before any big decisions or spending happen.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Easement and Eminent Domain Risk

If you are a landowner receiving this notice, Magnum may contact you to negotiate an easement to construct, operate, and maintain the proposed facilities. If you and the company do not reach an agreement and the Commission approves the project, the Natural Gas Act conveys the right of eminent domain to the company and it could initiate condemnation proceedings in court, with compensation determined by a judge under state law.

Construction Will Disturb About 619.9 Acres

The proposed project would disturb about 619.9 acres during construction and Magnum would maintain about 486.6 acres for permanent operation, with the remaining acreage restored and reverting to former uses. The work would occur in the project area described for Millard, Juab, and Utah Counties, Utah.

Request to Redesign and Add 5.2 Bcf Caverns

Magnum requests authorization to redesign two authorized caverns for 5.2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of working gas each and to construct and operate two additional storage caverns with 5.2 Bcf of working gas capacity each, plus one additional brine disposal pond and two new pipeline interconnections. The company seeks FERC approval as part of the project amendment.

Public Scoping and Comment Deadline

FERC is opening a scoping period and requests public comments on environmental issues; submit comments so the Commission receives them by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 17, 2025. You can file comments using FERC's eComment, eFiling, or by mailing a paper copy referencing Docket No. CP25-233-000 to Debbie-Anne A. Reese, Secretary.
