Sonic Boom for Safety: Cylinders Tested Less Often with Ultrasound
Published Date: 7/1/2025
Proposed Rule
Summary
This update lets companies test certain gas cylinders every 10 years using a cool ultrasonic method instead of more often. It helps folks who handle flammable and non-flammable gas containers save time and money by cutting down on how often they need to check their gear. The change kicks in soon and makes safety checks easier without skimping on safety.

10-Year Cylinder Requalification via Ultrasonic Test
The rule would adopt DOT Special Permit 14175 to allow a 10-year requalification period when using the ultrasonic examination (UE) testing method for DOT specification 3A and 3AA gas cylinders used in flammable and non-flammable, nonpoisonous gas service. If you own or operate these cylinders, you would need to have them requalified less often, which can cut the time and money spent on safety checks.
