Coast Guard Bubbles Up Zones for Lake Events – Boaters Beware!
Published Date: 7/2/2025
Rule
Summary
The Coast Guard is setting up safety zones in the Northern Great Lakes to keep everyone safe during special maritime events. Boats can’t enter these zones without permission before, during, and right after the events. This means boaters need to plan ahead to avoid delays, but it helps protect people and property on the water.

Northern Great Lakes Safety Zones
The Coast Guard will enforce recurring safety zones in the Captain of the Port Northern Great Lakes zone. During the enforcement periods — immediately prior to, during, and immediately after special maritime events — no person or vessel may enter the safety zones without permission from the Captain of the Port or their designated representative. If you operate a boat or vessel in that area, you will need to plan ahead to avoid delays or obtain permission before entering.
