Published Date: 7/18/2025

Notice

Summary

The Navy is planning to build a new dry dock and improve the waterfront at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, which means some shipyard jobs will move to another base. They’re also dredging to make the water deep enough for new construction. This project affects local tribes and the environment, with decisions and funding for some parts still coming later.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Some Shipyard Jobs Move to Bangor

If you work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, some existing upland shipyard functions affected by construction would be moved to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The Draft EIS says these upland functions would be relocated as part of the proposed waterfront and dry dock construction.

Dredging Will Affect Waterfront Environment

The Proposed Action includes dredging to create adequate water depth at wharves and piers and for construction of new structures. The Draft EIS notes the project affects local tribes and the environment.

Three Future Projects Not Funded Now

Three potential future actions—Pier 5 demolition, Pier 6 replacement, and Dry Dock 6 seismic upgrades—are not currently funded or programmed and have no construction schedule. If the Navy decides to proceed later, it will analyze environmental impacts in accordance with NEPA.
