407 More Steel Items Hit with Tariff Hammers This Week
Published Date: 8/19/2025
Notice
Summary
The government is adding 407 new product codes to the list of steel and aluminum items that face special tariffs. This means businesses dealing with these products will pay extra fees on the steel and aluminum parts, while other parts follow different rules. Some products are still being reviewed, so no changes there yet, but these updates kick in soon and could impact costs for importers and buyers.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
407 HTSUS Codes Added
The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) added 407 HTSUS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States) codes to the list of products treated as steel or aluminum derivative products. If you import or sell items under those 407 codes, the steel and aluminum content of those goods will be subject to Section 232 tariffs, which can raise costs for importers and buyers.
Tariffs Apply Only to Metal Content
For products designated as steel or aluminum derivative products, only the steel and aluminum content will be charged Section 232 tariffs. The non-steel and non-aluminum parts of those same imported products will remain subject to reciprocal and other applicable tariffs.
60 Codes Left Under Review
BIS decided not to include 60 HTSUS codes as steel or aluminum derivative products at this time because those codes are subject to other ongoing Section 232 or trade investigations. That means those 60 product codes are not being newly subjected to Section 232 treatment by this action.
