Notice

Summary

The Census Bureau is asking for approval to run the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses again, this time with some updates. About 62,500 nurses and nurse practitioners will spend about 30 minutes each sharing info about their jobs and education. This survey helps understand how the nursing workforce is changing, which is super important for healthcare planning and policy.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Time Burden on Selected Nurses

About 62,500 nurses and nurse practitioners (37,500 RNs and 25,000 NPs) will be asked to take the survey and each response averages 30 minutes. The total estimated burden is 31,250 hours, the survey is voluntary, and data collection for this cycle occurs every four years.

$5 Unconditional Incentive for Respondents

For the 2026 NSSRN cycle, the Census Bureau proposes a $5 unconditional incentive included with the initial web invitation letter for 90% of the sample. The $5 payment will be randomly assigned to 90% of selected respondents prior to data collection to try to increase response and lower follow-up costs.

Multiple Response Modes and Help Line

The survey will be offered by web (Centurion) and by one paper mailout/mailback questionnaire, and all respondents will have access to a telephone questionnaire assistance line for login help, language support, and to complete the interview by phone. Up to 125,000 RNs may be invited to participate using these modes.
