SEC Hits Pause on Commodity Trust Options Trading

Published Date: 9/9/2025

Notice

Summary

The Cboe Exchanges want to start listing options on Commodity-Based Trust Shares, which could open new trading opportunities for investors. The SEC is taking extra time to decide if this change is a good idea, so no final call has been made yet. This delay means traders and investors should stay tuned for updates before any new options hit the market.

Proposed Options on Commodity Trust Shares

On March 5, 2025, Cboe Exchange, Cboe BZX, and Cboe EDGX filed proposed rule changes to allow each Exchange to list and trade options on Commodity-Based Trust Shares. The proposal would, if approved, permit these Exchanges to list those new options for trading.

SEC Extends Decision Deadline 60 Days

The Commission extended the statutory decision period by 60 days, moving the deadline from the 180th day (September 15, 2025) to November 14, 2025, to allow more time to consider the proposed rule changes. That means the Exchanges and investors must wait until November 14, 2025 for the Commission to either approve or disapprove the listings.
