Government Rejects Tire Firm's 'No Big Deal' Safety Plea

Published Date: 11/17/2025

Notice

Summary

PT. Multistrada Arah Sarana (MASA) makes over 1.6 million Achilles, Corsa, Radar, and Milestar tires that don’t fully meet safety rules. MASA asked the government to ignore this problem, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said no. This means MASA must follow all safety fix and recall rules, which could affect tire owners and costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Manufacturer must notify and remedy tires

NHTSA denied PT. Multistrada Arah Sarana's petition, so MASA must provide notification and a free remedy (recall remedy) under 49 U.S.C. 30118 and 30120 for approximately 1,673,307 Achilles, Corsa, Radar, and Milestar tires manufactured between January 3, 2016 and March 14, 2020.

Some tires can’t be registered online

The subject tires have a third grouping in the Tire Identification Number (TIN) using up to six symbols (exceeding the allowed maximum of four), producing 14-character TINs; MASA's Achilles Tire USA registration system accepts only 13-character TINs, so those tires could not be registered and therefore consumers who cannot register may not be directly contacted in the event of a safety recall.
