Research to update PPE standards for workers
CDC/NIOSH will use the laboratory-collected data to support and update PPE performance standards and test methods to help ensure adequate protection of workers across multiple industry sectors. CDC requests a three-year extension of the Generic Information Collection Request (OMB Control No. 0920-1381; current expiration 2026-01-31) so this work can continue.
You could be recruited for PPE lab tests
CDC/NIOSH plans to recruit an estimated 1,750 respondents per year for laboratory testing of respirators and protective clothing, with an estimated annualized burden of 15,591 hours. There is no monetary cost to respondents other than their time. The public comment window for this information collection is 30 days from November 21, 2025.
Children as young as eight may be included
CDC/NIOSH states some studies in this data collection may include children down to age eight, especially in industries such as agriculture where children can work. Parents or guardians may be asked to provide consent and children may undergo measurements and biological tests as part of laboratory testing.
