Michelin Tires' Small Flaw Deemed Harmless by NHTSA

Published Date: 11/28/2025

Notice

Summary

Michelin found a small problem with about 7,153 of their LTX A/T2 tires made early 2023, but it doesn’t affect safety. The government agreed this issue is minor, so no recalls or fixes are needed. If you have these tires, you’re good to go—no costs or actions required!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

No Recall or Remedy for Tires

If you own Michelin LTX A/T2 tires size LT275/65R20 126/123R made between January 15, 2023 and February 8, 2023 (approximately 7,153 tires reported), NHTSA found the tires had an incorrect sidewall marking but agreed the issue is inconsequential to motor vehicle safety. Because NHTSA granted Michelin's petition on November 28, 2025, Michelin is exempt from notifying owners and providing a free remedy for those tires no longer controlled by the company, so you do not need to take action or pay for a fix for those tires.

Dealers Can't Sell These Tires

If you are a tire distributor or dealer, NHTSA's grant (published November 28, 2025) exempts Michelin from owner notification and remedy duties but does not remove the legal prohibition on distributors and dealers selling, offering for sale, or introducing the noncompliant tires into interstate commerce after Michelin notified them that the noncompliance existed. Dealers must therefore not sell noncompliant tires that remain under their control following Michelin's notification.
